Carrying a 600mm f/4 Lens

Carrying a 600mm f/4 Lens

These Canon 600mm lenses, not only are expensive (an arm, a leg, and the next 2 generations of kids) but they are heavy. The lens, the camera, the tripod, the bag… we are talking about 35lbs/15kg.

I don’t like photographers, like this guy, that walk around with their tripod wide open. Everybody’s supposed to get out of their way. When the path is narrow, the bushes… and I’m supposed to get out of their way.

A Very Patient Wife

A Very Patient Wife

What every photographer needs is a very patient wife or a very patient partner that:

  • Puts up with the: ‘Just one more’, ‘Just a second, it’s great light…’
  • Understands why her husband needs to spend thousandS of dollars on toys…

Notice how she also looks in the direction of the birds that her husband is trying to make photos off? She’s not looking at her watch or her phone or even a book/magazine.

Chinese Photographer

Chinese Photographer

This photographer was part of a Chinese tour group that came to Western Canada.

I spoke with the tour guide. It was a tour group that came for photographing the Eagles at the Harrison Flats (in BC, in the beginning of November). Then they were going to tour around the Rockies. Eventually, the group was driving down to Seattle and Los Angeles to fly back to China.

Darktable: Lighttable Overlays part 2

Darktable, shows some information about the image, like the filename, the extension, the aperture, the shutter speed, the focal lens, and the iso. The problem, for me, is that I use the virtual copies (in Lightroom language), aka duplicates (in Darktable language), a lot.

What’s what? Which one is the original photo and which one is the virtual copy, aka the duplicate? Darktable doesn’t show it in the Lighttable. It shows it in the Darktable.

Preparing a New Battery

Many places have boxing week sales. I needed another spare battery. I’m in Canada and ‘they’ charge an arm, a leg and even a second leg for the Canon batteries. Why are they so expensive? Because they can. Because of higher capacity with the small CPU inside the battery to monitor/manage the battery. They are almost twice as expensive in Canada as in the US. Some drugstore that also sells cameras had a 15% off sale on camera batteries. 15% is only slightly more than the sales taxes we have in Vancouver, British Columbia. But it’s significant enough, so I bought the battery.

Only An Idiot Would…

Only an idiot would buy a Canon R5 and shoot in JPEG!

by Richard … aka Anon Ymous

Anon Ymous screams first, opens his big mouth, contradicts everybody and is not very competent. You know the type. You know him at the photo club. You also see him at the wedding where he always tell everybody how bad the professional photographer is and what he’s doing wrong. He always shut down people on the forums…

Darktable: Modules to Avoid

With the Darktable 3.x serie and continued with the Darktable 4.x serie, the developers have introduced a whole bunch of new concepts, including:

  • scene referred processing
  • display referred processing
  • LAB space vs Linear RGB processing

All these things have implications about which module to use or not.

Questions Not To Ask A Photographer

Recently, I was asked by a potential customer one of the “worst” question she could ask:

Which camera are you using?

— anonymous (2019)

It’s like asking a mechanism which wrench does he use? Or asking a painter which brush size does he use?
