Life and Death of the Batteries

This is the part one of a two part blog post about batteries and how it affects us as photographers.

The battery technology is extremely old and hasn’t changed much since the 1830s, yes that is 180 years ago. Some chemicals have changed but not the physics of the batteries. And right now, the biggest drag on technology is the battery technology. In the early 1800s, a few people including Volta (an Italian scientist that did most of the basic discovery work about electricity), developed the wet battery that we still use mostly in cars, buses…

Fujifilm: Focus Check

Fuji has a quick way. You need to chimp.

  • In the play mode
  • Press the rear wheel
  • The image will zoom to the focus point, even if the focus point/area is not in the middle
  • You can move around with the joystick
  • To get out of the zoomed mode, to go back to the full view, press the rear wheel again
Photographer v. Pigeons

Photographer v. Pigeons

It’s difficult to take photos while feeding the pigeons.

Many people do not like pigeons, they call them rats with wings.

Scientists are speculating that pigeons were the first bird to ever be domesticated.

Super Woman

Super Woman

This woman photographer is amazing! She must be from the planet Krypton.

She’s an older person (I would guess in her late 50s, early 60s) and she carries a 1DMk4 with a 600mm f/4. She makes her photos HAND-HELD. That’s 24Lbs/11Kg at the end of her extended arm.

That day, the light was not the greatest, it was grey, low contrast and very cloudy. Either she’s super-woman or she uses ISO 100,000. Look at the arch of her back…

Intrepid Photographer

Intrepid Photographer

The guy is a professional. He rented a Canon 500 f/4L lens for the weekend. The lens was introduced in 1999 (not only it was the previous century, it was the previous millennium!).

There’s an IS (Image Stabilization) built in the lens. It’s OK for ‘kind of stabilizing’ the lens but… It’s not that good. The lens is just above 4kg/just above 9lbs, plus the camera, only supported by the left arm. Impressive!

Fujifilm X-PRO2: Face Detection

  1. Face detection controls both focus and metering. It disables all the photometry choices.
  2. In the face detection mode, the AF-L (auto-focus lock) does not work.
  3. In the face detection mode, the AE-L (auto-exposure lock) does not work.

Formatting Memory Cards: The Debunking Unit

Everyday somebody complains, on one of the many photo-forums, about problems with their memory card be it Compact Flash Express, CF Express, or Secure Digital, SD, card. And the standard answer is: “Reformat card in the camera after every upload to your computer”.

There are so many misconceptions, so at great personal expenses, I had to call the “Debunking Unit”. And let me tell you, these guys don’t come cheap.

Trust The Force, Luke

Some people are “jerks!” I was doing a photo shoot for a customer downtown with some breaks in between for the people to relax. That’s when this guy barged in and asked me questions about my Canon 7DMkII. Actually, it wasn’t about my 7DMkII, it was about his Canon 7DMkII. He had problems with the exposure. According to him, it’s was always wrong. What could I recommend?

Blame the Equipment

Canon can’t do anything right, their latest, the 70D is made of plastic and it should have included the 7D autofocus system and it also needs the lens micro-adjustment… Nikon can’t do anything right either. Their latest, the D7100, which doesn’t ship yet, should have at least 32 megapixels, at least run at 8 frames per second, at least have a fully articulated LCD and finally it should have 2 CPUs to run at full speed…
