Questions Not To Ask A Photographer

Recently, I was asked by a potential customer one of the “worst” question she could ask:

Which camera are you using?

— anonymous (2019)

It’s like asking a mechanism which wrench does he use? Or asking a painter which brush size does he use?

Some of the Secrets from the Flash World

I’ve been reading “Speedliter’s Handbook” from Syl Arena. Reading is nothing, the most important part is actually trying and experimenting. Here are my discoveries from some of these experiments.

Secret #1 of when using the flash

The shutter speed controls the ambient light when using the flash. The Canon 7D has a sync speed of up to 1/250th of a second with the flash. At short range, the flash is the main source of light. The flash, at full power, has a speed of 1/1000 for the 580ExII and 1/500 for the 430ExII. The light from the flash will not be affected (almost) by a camera Tv change of 1/250 to a 1/60 of a second. But the ambient light will be significantly affected.

Flash Maintenance

The flashes are very old technology. Flash started in 1864 with magnesium wires. The first electronic flash tube was created in 1931 by Harold Edgerton.

Raw and Colour Space

Almost all dSLRs and mirrorless cameras (except some of the really, really old dSLRs from the early 2000) provide two colour spaces, the ubiquitous sRGB (standard RGB)1 and aRGB (adobe RGB)2. aRGB was developed by Adobe as a colour space that would cover the full CMYK colour space used by printing presses like magazines…

The Upside of Selfies

In 2014, InfoTrends predicted that that people will upload 1 trillion photos in 2015. That’s one thousand billion photos with 80% uploaded to Facebook and the other 20% to the rest of what used to be called the Information Superhighway. That’s Flickr, Instagram, Google+, websites…

The Camera Check: The Evening Before

When people go to church and pray, usually they are have a ritual. It involves getting dressed, gather the… It’s a ritual. Me, I have a similar ritual before going to create photos. I usually do it the evening before, so my bag is ready and I just have to pick it up. Since it’s a ritual, I always do it in the same way. Now it’s almost automatic and it usually takes me about 10 to 15 minutes unless something special is involved like re-calibrating the lenses.

Fujifilm: Gridlines

Setting up the gridlines

Go into the display menu and set what shows up for each viewing device:

  • ovf
  • evf
  • lcd

Setup > Screen Setup > Disp Custom Settings

Display the gridlines

Even after setting the gridlines in the setups, you will need to use the display button on the back of the camera to make that display option the active one.

Fujifilm: Metering Modes Not Changing

Why isn’t the metering mode not changing and being disabled in the menus?

  • Check the settings for the face detection, it should be disabled.

Note

Fujifilm X-PRO2: ISO High and Low

With firmware v3.0 on the X-PRO2 and v2.0 on the X-T2, Fuji announced that ISO L would provide ISO 125 and ISO 160 as selectable.

It doesn’t always work. BTW, the same thing also happens with the ISO 25600 or ISO 51200 of the ISO HIGH.
