X-PRO2/X-T2/X-T20: HSS & TTL. What a mouth full.

One of Fujifilm’s weakness against Canon and Nikon is the lack of a proper flash system. Roboshoot did a pretty good job at converting Nikon flash to Fuji so one could use Nikon flashes with Fujifilm:

  1. It’s expensive.
  2. I use Canon with Canon flashes, so I would have to buy new Nikon type flashes.

Flash “Secrets”

The word secret is in quote because it’s not really a secret, just people forget about them or do not understand flash.

  1. A photon is a photon. If it comes from the sun, an LED, a light bulb or a flash. It’s light
  2. The shutter speed controls the ambient light. Almost all modern flashes are much faster than any regular shutter speed.
  3. The Aperture controls the amount of light from the flash.
  4. The ISO influences both the ambient light and the light from the flash.

Inside a room with background

A good starting point is:

  • Set shutter speed: 1/40s
  • Set aperture: f/4
  • Set ISO: 400
  • Set flash to TTL

Inside a room without background

A good starting point is:

  • Set shutter speed: 1/125s
  • Set aperture: f/5.6
  • Set ISO: 400
  • Set flash to TTL

At the end of June 2017, Godox started shipping the small TT350F flash. It’s a small flash with only 2 batteries, but it supports TTL and HSS with the Fuji X-PRO2, the X-T2, and the X-T20. There are other Fujifilm cameras supported will only do TTL and some older Fujifilm like the X-PRO1 can only use it as a manual flashes.

This is not Godox’s fault, it’s Fuji’s fault. They have changed the programming of the flash in early 2017.

The TT350F can also be a wireless commander with the other Godox flashes, even if they are not Godox for Fujifilm. It works with my TT685c (for Canon) in wireless TTL mode.

Let me introduce you to: Wile E. Coyote

So here are some photos with the important EXIF values:

I only paid: $103 Canadian. It works properly (I would say better than the Fuji X-500, that only tried for a few minutes) and includes wireless control.

So what’s the catch?

  1. It’s a 2 batteries flash.
  2. It has to work harder to keep up with the workload.
  3. There’s a maximum of 30 consecutive flash at full power in fairly quick succession before the unit shuts down for heat protection. So far, it’s not a problem for me.
  4. Not much power for HSS, so the flash needs to be positioned very extremely close to the subject.
  5. HSS and a light modifier or bouncing. Don’t expect miracles, it’s a very small flash.
  6. The manual: significantly underwhelming. There’s not much in the manual.
