Pig Ears: The Super-Sized Treat My Dog Couldn't Resist

Years ago, my first dog, Coyote aka Totos, loved pig ears. At first, I was buying them at the pet store, they were small and would give one to my dog for trimming his toe nails. I just had to make the sign and he would run, bulldoze the cat and put himself in position for the trimming of his nails. He loved them but after chewing on them, he had to pee about 20 times, mostly at night.

Then one day, I saw these pigs ears at the market. I don’t know where they get them but they were huge. Did they use steroids or what?

I know that some people say that I shouldn’t give my dog the pig ears because of the salt, the fat and all the hormones that they stuff in those pigs. But my dog loved them.

With those giant ears, I had to cut them into smaller pieces with my gardening shears. What an ordeal! Then one day, I noticed that the butcher had a band saw at the back to cut bones.

I started buying in four, five or six pig ears at a time, and he cut them in half in less than 2 seconds.

  1. Problem solved.
  2. Happy dog

I asked the butcher about the “For Dogs Only” sign. He told me that some people used to buy these pig ears and boil them to eat them. Many came back and complained about the bad taste, so the butcher put up the sign:

For Dogs Only!
