That Magnificent Hound!
I was out on the beach the other day, doing what I love – photographing dogs at play. And I came across this lovely hound.
I think it’s a Deerhound, but I’m not entirely sure. He has that characteristic look, but he seems a bit smaller and his fur is a little longer than usual. It’s those subtle differences that often fascinate me! I wish I could have asked the owner – she was “mia” (missing in action!), probably enjoying the beach somewhere else.

This particular dog was a real sight – completely disheveled! He’s just cooled off from a lively chase after a smaller dog. It was – a moment of pure joy, followed by a well-deserved dip in the ocean. It’s those moments that make my job so rewarding.
Deerhounds are a pretty rare find in my area. It’s always a treat to photograph one! They’re an ancient breed.
The Scots used Deerhounds in a pretty remarkable way – they were deployed against the Roman legions when the Romans tried to expand into Scotland. There are interesting Roman accounts of the Scots sending these hounds into the Roman lines, mauling them. Then, the Scots would move in to finish the job. It’s a fascinating piece of history to consider.
I’m always learning, and I appreciate any feedback from my community. If you know what breed this beautiful dog might be, please let me know! You can email me, or reach out via https://www.sritch.com/contact. I’m happy to hear your thoughts.
