From Racing Track to the Couch: Oliver the Racing Greyhound

This is Oliver. He’s a racing Greyhound from Tijuana, Mexico.

Sharon adopted him 3 years ago from one of the Greyhound rescue. What a shock to his system. He came from hot and dry place, living in kennels with another hundred greyhounds. And now? He lives in a house and he appropriated himself the living room couch for sleeping. He doesn’t sleep on the floor anymore.

In Tijuana, he wasn’t winning at the racing tracks, so they shipped him north to a US rescue which forwarded him to an Alberta rescue. For those of you that don’t know, Alberta is very hot in the summer +30°C or around 85°F and in the winter it gets down to -25°C or around -15°F. He spent 4 month in Alberta learning how to live in a house, but…

He doesn’t like the city life. It’s the traffic, the unfamiliar smells, the activities, the constructions, the people… it unsettled him. It took him a quite a while to get used to a house, and even longer to get used to the loneliness of being an only dog. He was used to all the others dogs and the racing. The change from a life of shared space and structured routine to a being at home by himself was difficult for Oliver.

Now look at him. Look how relaxed he is on his walk. I’m fairly certain Oliver is happy dog, now. He’s settled, content, and slowly, surely, he’s come into his own.
