Even Dogs Have Bad Hair Days
Toby is a black Labradooddle and he’s having a bad hair day. Not just people, but dogs can also have bad hair days. For him, it’s mostly on windy days. His hair flies everywhere and he looks scruffy. It’s not his best look, but he doesn’t care. But as a dog, wow, what a nice and very polite dog with excellent doggy manners.

As all normal dogs, Toby wants to sniff my dog who’s walking with me but slightly behind. Polite dogs go around the other dog and eventually sniff the butt of the other dog. Not Toby. First he came toward me as I was taking my photos while kneeling on the ground, which is already unusual. Then he stopped beside me, like he was introducing himself. Then (that’s a lot of then) he asked for my permission to sniff my dog. I couldn’t say no to such a polite and respectful dog. It was so sweet.
Toby is supposed to be the short for Tobias, but in this case it’s the short for Toblerone. Toblerone is the chocolate that was created by Mr Tobler in Switzerland at the beginning of the 20th century, excellent luxury chocolate mostly sold around Xmas. When Toby was a young puppy, he wasn’t a black dog, he was a dark brown puppy, almost the colour of the Toblerone chocolate, so his owners called him Toby and the name stuck even when he turned black.
It’s very difficult to photograph well black dogs, they usually end up as big black blobs in the photo.
- Dogs are black but the photo can’t be black or we wouldn’t see anything.
- We need to have some light to provide enough details in the dark areas to see the eyes, the nose, the ears…
- It’s a delicate balancing act that is based on perception and contrast.
