The Dignity of an Older Lab: Vancouver, BC

This old chocolate lab, (he was 13 or 14 years old and I do not remember his name) wanted somebody to play with him and his toy. It was too difficult for him to move his back legs due to dysplasia and arthritis. The eyes… They make me want to cry.

I like older dogs. Somehow dogs seem to have “understand us”. They understand everything that’s important. No, not the so called important stuff but the really, really meaningful stuff.

There is a dignity in older dogs. Most of the older dogs have come to accept our erratic, never consistent behaviours.

Delilah: New Westminster, BC

Delilah is almost 20 years old and she’s ‘pissed off’ at me.

I have spent the last half an hour trying to make an half decent photo of her. She did everything she could to hide under tables, chairs, couch… So we grabbed her, put her on Brian’s shoulder and I did all my stupid, silly sounds to get her attention.

Soda, a 19 Years Old Chow: Coquitlam, BC

Soda is a very, very old Chow. She’s 19. By doggie standard that would make her around 130 years old. 130! That’s extremely old. She’s almost blind, has arthritis and has difficulty to walk but she’s stubborn enough to go up the stairs every evening to go to the bedroom. It’s a struggle but she wants to go upstairs.

She almost can’t see, she can’t hear anything but her nose works properly and she is very easily bribe-able.

Yoda, the Pug: Vancouver, BC

Yoda is an old pug. He rides in a bicycle sidecar designed like an old German plane from World War I. It should be a motorcycle, but it’s a bicycle.

His name is Yoda like the Yoda from Star Wars. He’s supposed to be wise with the ‘wisdom of the force’. He puts up with the leather helmet and all these things. Contrarily to the ‘real’ Yoda character, he is afraid of people. He doesn’t bark, he doesn’t bite but he’s afraid of anybody that looks at him. At least, he doesn’t hide under the seat.

His owner wanted a gregarious dog and instead he got a ‘chicken’. I don’t remember who said to me: ‘You don’t get the dog that you want, instead you get the dog that you need.’

Dog Waiting For His Biscuit

This dog is waiting for his biscuit. He’s laying there in the middle of the stairs to make sure that nobody can pass by and forgets that he is owed a biscuit.

He looks like a German Shepherd puppy, but he’s 13 years old. He’s half German Sheppard, half Whippet (that’s the smaller Greyhound) and he’s also a half Pointer (yes, there are at least 3 halves in him.)

And most importantly, he’s my dog!

Snootsy: Vancouver, BC

Snootsy is a 15 years old ‘sausage’, aka a Dachshund, He looks very goods, goes around and he’s doing very well for his age. Snootsy’s main problem is eating his food. If the doesn’t finish his meal, Ozzie, the cat, will steal his food.

I like ‘sausages’. I always call the Dachshunds as sausages because many years ago, I met this lady with a smooth hair Dachshund, that was a big chicken and his name was ‘sausage’. But before going out, she used to make him wear a plastic hot dog bun held by some material that was made to look like some mustard on top. The amazing thing was that when ‘sausage’ would wear his hot dog costume he was proud and almost afraid of nothing.

Samson the Cat: New Westminster, BC

Samson doesn’t live up to his name. Samson is supposed to be strong, courageous. The keyword here is supposed.

Samson is afraid of almost everything, especially me and my camera with the big lens. So he’s been ‘demoted!’ His current name is just Sam.

Samson is a very old cat, he’s almost 20 years old.

A 17 years old dog and still going for the daily walks

A 17 years old dog and still going for the daily walks.

It’s more like a slow stroll than a walk. A stop here, a stop there but the walk is the walk. Every day, rain or shine, she goes on the walk.
