Lightroom: How to Delete All Keywords at Once

category: Lightroom • 1 min read

I am reorganizing my keywords in the WIP, Work In Progress, catalog. I need to delete 1394 keywords. Deleting over a thousand keywords. one at a time? Very, very, very painful! Too painful.

Lightroom does not provide the facility to delete all the keywords, but you can…

  1. Delete all the keywords from all the photos.
  2. Purge unused keywords.

Delete all the keywords from all the photos

  1. Select all the photos.
  2. In the right panel: Keywording, select all the keywords and delete them.

Lightroom: Select all the keywords for all photos

Lightroom: Select all the keywords for all photos

Delete all the keywords from all the photos can be a very, very long operation. depending on the number of photos in your catalog. It took me a full 20 minutes to delete all the keywords in 11000 photos on a slower computer.

All the keywords become unused.

Purge the unused keywords

From the Metadata menu, Purge unused keywords

Lightroom: Purge all unused keywords

Done! All the keywords have been deleted in just 2 steps.
