• The aperture controls the amount of light from the flash/strobe
  • The shutter speed which is almost always slower than the flash (except for the Elinchrome strobes with their High-Sync) controls the ambient light.
  • The ISO that influence both the ambient light and the flashed light.

For a specific flash, the amount of light generated depend on the distance between the light and the subject (see the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law).

When using automatic and TTL flash system sometimes the flash exposure changes from one image to the next, so the the “know it all” say that you should “nail” your exposure and set everything to manual and nothing will change.

The problem is what can you do when the distance between the flash and the subject changes constantly? TTL to the rescue.

I only had 5 minutes for the tour of this shoe maker: Dayton Boots: https://www.daytonboots.com/ The place is quite dark in spite of having white walls. Without the flash, I would have needed ISO 6400 (that’s OK with me), f/2 or f/2.8 (not enough depth of field), and around 1/10s to 1/5s (I did not have my tripod with me).

I took 12 photos, all are good, 4 are good enough to be keepers. Will they ever go in my portfolio? I don’t know…

I was at f/6.4, AutoISO, Auto shutter speed, and AutoDR. Each station: “POP” next station…

  • The Godox TT350F uses only 2 AA batteries. The recycle time was between 3 and 5 seconds.
  • The flash is pointed straight up to light the work space area.
  • The images have not been processed or changed, just:
    • shrunk to 1000px
    • added the border with my name/website
  • The images need some straightening and/or some lowering of some of the highlights.
