Fujifilm has released new firmware updates for almost all of their older X serie cameras. That’s for all of the X cameras, except for the X-T2, X-T20 and the X-PRO2. The firmware updates are for:

  • X-A1
  • X-A2
  • X-A3
  • X-A10
  • X-E1
  • X-E2
  • X-E2S
  • X-M1
  • X-Pro1
  • X-T1
  • X-T10

The official reason for the updates is to improve the AutoFocus accuracy with the new Fujifilm 80mm f/2.4 macro lens. BTW, It looks like quite a few people have already received their order in spite of the shipping/embargo date for the 80mm f/2.4 macro being 30-Nov-2017.

Why no firmware update for X-T2, X-T20 and the X-PRO2?

  • The X-T2 firmware update is supposed to be coming by the end of November 2017 with the new and improved AF-C of the X-E3.
  • The X-PRO2 firmware update is supposed to be coming in December 2017 with the new/improved AF-C of the X-E3 and the 4k video features.
  • The X-T20 status is unknown because of some hardware issues such as not having enough flash memory for the size of the new firmware.

Should you update the firmware even though you do not use/have the new Fujifilm 80mm f/2.4 macro lens?

My answer is yes: Fuji often includes other undocumented updates in their firmware. Which one? Don’t know since they are undocumented and notice the keyword often.

  • Since this is a firmware update that will affect all X cameras, it means that the new Fujifilm 80mm f/2.4 macro lens has brand new, radically different, focusing mechanism to all the other Fujifilm lenses.
  • Will Fujifilm use this new AF mechanism in their future lenses?

30-Nov-2017

Fujifilm has released the new firmware for the X-T2 and the X-T20:

X-T2

  1. Upgraded AF-C for tracking moving subjects twice as fast as before.
  2. Support “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO” for Macintosh. The Windows version will be in early next year.
  3. Improvements of the radio flash controller usability. What does this mean? Is it going to “screw-up” the existing flash radio controllers? Meaning more flash firmware upgrades?
  4. Support for the new “Instax SHARE SP-3”

X-T20

The X-T20 firmware upgrade is much more limited:

  1. The touch panel is now operational while looking into the viewfinder.
  2. Support for the new “Instax SHARE SP-3”
