The Rarity of a Young Greyhound in Vancouver
I always watch dogs. Even when I’m not with my own dog or not taking photos of dogs. I’m always surprised by what I observe. This is a younger Greyhound, maybe a year old, not fully grown yet. Look at these huge back thighs!
It’s very unusual to see young Greyhounds here in Canada. Almost everybody adopts the rescue Greyhounds. They used to come from Las Vegas and from Florida. But most of the Florida Greyhound racing tracks have closed or move their operations to Mexico. Here, in Vancouver, we get mostly Mexican Greyhounds that were “retired” from their racing career. These “regular” Greyhounds either weren’t successful enough or had some injury that stopped them from racing.
In my area, quite a few people have Whippets, which are the smaller cousins of the Greyhound.
On that day, I was walking with my own dog, and this Greyhound was very exited. He wanted to come and sniff my dog and he was also interested in me. I was kneeling down, taking his photo. But… The owner was pulling him to go in the other direction. Eventually, the Greyhound gave up and they kept walking.
Finding young Greyhounds in Canada is pretty rare, therefore expensive. Greyhounds need to run. Some people have weekly meetups at the beach for the running and going ‘crazy’, but that’s only for the “good” Greyhounds. The beach isn’t fenced, and I wish you good luck trying to run after a Greyhound that is running away.
