Whippets: They’re Not Just Fast, They’re Curious
Have you ever seen a dog with such big eyes? This whippet, mid-trot, looked back at me without breaking his stride and kept pace with his owner. His ears are perked up, which is quite unusual for whippets, who usually have their ears flopped to the side. It’s the sound of my camera and the sight of my own dog alongside me that made him pay attention.

It was February in Vancouver. It was sunny and warm enough for this whippet not to need his fleece coat. I’ve even seen whippets in June or July wearing fleeces! They’re so thin, with almost no fat to protect them from the cold—but they’re incredibly fast.
My first dog was half Whippet, half German Shepherd, and half Pointer. Those three parts together made him a full dog. Throughout his life, he looked like a thin German Shepherd puppy but he was fast! So fast that once I raced against my neighbour’s Porsche Boxter S. In just two steps, he reached his top speed of 45 km/h or 30 mph. He smoked the Porsche! Eventually, the Porsche caught and passed him…
Look at the leash, it’s loose. The whippet simply matches his owner’s pace. It’s the trust and the countless runs together that create such fluidity.
