It was a cool spring morning. Normally, there aren’t many single women walking on the Vancouver Seawall, sometimes there’s an older woman walking by herself, but a younger, attractive single woman walking around is quite rare. Since I’m a regular (I often walk with my dog on the Vancouver Seawall), often I see how these single women get accosted or whistled by guys walking around.

On the other hand, this lady with her two huskies? That was a whole different story. It was very interesting, even funny, to see all the people going out of their way to avoid her and her dogs. Not once did these Huskies bark. Not once did they growl. These Huskies were perfectly behaved.

Two large dogs walking with their owner in such a calm manner must be threatening! Not one of the dogs missed a step when they saw me. I’m pretty obvious: I’m kneeling in the middle of the path, to be at the dogs’ eye level, with my camera and lens pointed at them and own dog waiting patiently next to me. I’m not sneaking and taking photos on the run. I spotted them before the turn on the left in the background.

She saw me from the turn, but she never said anything. Once they were close enough, I finished my photos, said thanks, stood up, and walked away with my own dog. Both of her dogs looked at either me or my dog, more likely at my dog, but they never slowed down, never pulled toward us or even missed a step.

What I love about these Huskies is their grace and their demeanour. They walk with aplomb, no hesitation, and they don’t walk softly either. They are big and powerful dogs. Huskies are working dogs. They need to pull long and hard. I wonder what kind of exercise she does to keep them under control?
