Max, the Mean Dog: Vancouver, BC

This is Max, an Lhasa Apso, walking down the street toward me and my dog Dodoïte (pronounced: Dodo ïte) https://www.sritch.com/search/?s=Dodo%C3%AFte. He knows us well, but he’s ashamed of his daily behaviour.

Max just lives just a block away from where we live. He half lies on the couch by the window. As soon as he hears us walking by, he starts going nuts and barks like it’s the end of the world! He has to protect his house. He’s committed, he’s ready to kill us, and this happens at least 4 or 5 times a week. Sophie, Max’s owner, tries to calm him, but she has no effect while we walk by.

Every few days, we, that’s me with my dog and Sophie with Max, meet on the street, and it’s the same routine:

  • Max’s warrior attitude disappears.
  • Max lowers his head.
  • He looks away.
  • He tries to ignore us.
  • He shuffles away in the hope that we won’t notice him.

Normally, dogs will at least look at each other, even if they aren’t allowed to sniff each other. Max knows what he did and is ashamed of himself. I know I might be deluding myself by thinking that, but why not? It could happen!

Then every time we walk by his house and Max is on his couch, there he goes…
