French Bulldog Planning His Next Attack
Doesn’t he look cute? I took this photo of Henry when he was just nine weeks old. Look at that face, so serious! You’d think that he was contemplating the mysteries of the universe. Nooo! In fact, he was observing and sizing up all the people around him. He’s planning his next pounce demanding that somebody plays with him.
French Bulldogs, aka Frenchies, have this incredible ability to look both comical and regal, often within the same five seconds. They’re little clowns, but with a definite air of self-importance. Henry, even then, had it in spades.

I took this photo only a couple of days before his right ear decided to stand up like his left ear. A little milestone! He weighed in at around 8 or 9 pounds (around 4 kg) at the time. Now, a year and a half on, he’s nearly 40 pounds (around 18 kg). He hasn’t quite doubled in size, but he’s definitely “bulked up”, as they say. All that playful bulldozing takes its toll!
What always strikes me about Frenchies is their individual characters. French Bulldogs are not a breed that blends into the background. Each one is a personality. Each one is eager to charm and entertain. Henry is a bit of a mischief-maker, always up for a game, but he also has a lovely, sensitive side. He knows when people need a cuddle, and he’s always happy to offer one.
It’s amazing how dogs seem to understand us so well? It’s a connection that goes beyond any word. They read our body language, pick up on our moods, and offer unconditional love, even when we’re at our most grumpy.
Thinking about Frenchies and artists, I was reading the other day about Toulouse-Lautrec, that famous painter of the Parisian nightlife from the late 1800s. Did you know that he painted a French Bulldog named Bouboule in several of his paintings? He even did some charcoal drawings of him. Bouboule belonged to Madame Palmyre, who owned “La Souris”, a popular restaurant that Toulouse-Lautrec often visited. It just goes to show, Frenchies have been capturing hearts – and inspiring artists – for almost two centuries!
I think it’s important to remember that our dogs aren’t just our pets, they are part of our families. They’re there for us through thick and thin, offering companionship and a warm, furry shoulder to lean on. Capturing those moments, the little quirks, the silly expressions, the quiet connections, is something I really cherish. It’s why I love photographing dogs. It’s about preserving those memories, celebrating their unique personalities, and creating something beautiful that will last a lifetime.
